Q: Is there a way to password-protect Windows to prevent someone from making changes to your computer? A: Letting friends or family members -- the ones who might not own a PC yet -- onto your computer is a burden you'll probably experience at some time. It's a burden because if they know what they're doing, they can change numerous settings on your machine without you ever knowing. Even worse are the devastating problems an inexperienced user can cause, such as deleting programs or moving and renaming files and folders. Windows isn't a secure operating system, so the best way to prevent someone from entering your computer is to implement a BIOS password. Doing this will lock down your system before it even starts. Your computer will not initialize the files required to begin the boot sequence unless someone enters the proper BIOS password. WARNING: Don't loose your BIOS password. Otherwise, your computer will require major work to become functional again. To set your BIOS password follow these directions: Make sure your computer is turned off. Determine the proper keystroke that will enable you to enter your BIOS. The keystroke is more than likely going to be the Delete key. If it's not, look at your manual to determine what the proper keystroke should be. Get ready to turn on your computer and hit the Delete key. You should see a message at the bottom of your screen while your computer is booting up that says, "Press to enter BIOS." It flashes quickly, so be prepared. If you don't get it the first time, turn your computer off and try again. When you successfully enter BIOS, you're going to need to navigate to the Security screen. Once you've found the security screen, find the line where you set a password. Carefully select a password that you're going to remember. As a security option you should be prompted to enter it twice. The flavor of your BIOS will dictate the type of passwords you'll be able to set up. Save changes before exiting BIOS. Log in to your computer using your new BIOS password.Another option to prevent someone from using your computer is to password-protect a screen saver. If your computer is inactive long enough, a screen saver will turn on and require a password before it turns off. To set up a screen saver with a password, follow these directions: Left-click the Start menu, mouse-over Settings, and then left-click Control Panel. Double-click the Display icon. Select the Screen Saver tab. Select a screen saver from the pull-down menu if one isn't already selected. Place a checkmark in the Password field and then hit the Change button. Determine a password and enter it twice. Select OK when you've finished entering a password. If you're still paranoid about your system being altered, then a software download is in order. Put an end to unwanted tweaks to your computer with a program called Secure Comp from TAF Technology. This great piece of freeware allows you to password-protect almost anything on your machine through its easy-to-use graphical interface. You can even filter websites with Secure Comp. It also gives you the ability to lock any Windows application, hide any of your drives, and disable the Ctrl-Alt-Delete and Ctrl-Esc commands. Think I'll try using the BIOS password thang..

hey theo, have you tried to simply set a password on the PC BIOS? it won't even boot to windows unless your friends can get past that. it's free, if your PC BIOS supports passwords.

Hey Decoy, i really really didn't do that one on purpose, why do you not recommend a BIOS Password? It seems like the perfect solution. Really want to know cuz I hate getting into the BIOS...have some successes and some real down falls in the past... The info I tried to post with all the lines was from TechTV.

If you use the BIOS password, you have to leave the machine off and boot it every time you want to use it. Maybe thats ok, I just leave mine on all the time.

Ok so that Rene, head of the ACLU, was just on the Daily show. I'm thinking that she may a bad liberal. But I guess it all balances out. Its the first time I've heard her talk, but If there was a crime committed in a neighborhood, Does it violate people's civil liberties to ask the people related to the crime questions? Or to canvas the locals? She's going to Washingtom to tell congress to not call in all the recent immigrants. She'll meet with lots of love, I expect.

Good for John. I like him. He's got a bit of common sense to him. He kinda shut her down. And he's right. She had very little argument. As John stated, there's like 8 criteria that brought the government to question these people. Remember al those anti-militia segments of the news after Oklahoma bombing? Oh well.
