Froupie:
affordable healthcare is still less affordable than free healthcare...

Froupie:
but you're right, i'd be straight on a plane to the NHS. i've paid my dues in national insurance.

Froupie:
heard a couple of right horror stories recently with 2 american chums - one had a stroke and one needed cancer treatment... they were both wiped out by the healthcare cost.

Froupie:
they both had friends who set up gofundme's to help towards their healthcare costs. that to me seems utter madness.

Myk Murphy:
Yes, it is the basic problem here: costs are high and if you have no insurance (or crappy insurance), it can wreck your finances.

Froupie:
yeah, my friend Otis had the stroke and he's a self employed artist. the other one had to sell her house to pay for cancer treatment.

Froupie:
what do you do if you literally can't pay for treatment? just go and die somewhere?

Myk Murphy:
Sometimes a charity steps in, but what usually happens is that you go bankrupt, qualify for Medicaid, and then seek treatment through that system. It's not designed for pricey treatment, of course, so lower one's expectations when you hit Medicaid. As any good conservative would tell you: "don't get sick, it's a bad idea."
